Cleaning and Maintenance Secrets for Vacation Rentals on Maui

Updated: 4 days ago

Cleaning and maintaining vacation rentals can be a daunting task, especially in Maui where it's challenging to find local experts who can help. As and expert in hospitality and vacation rental owner myself, I've picked up a few secrets over the years that can help keep your property in top shape and your guests happy to ensure 5 star reviews.

Top Cleaning Tips to Be Cleaner than the Hotels

Running a vacation rental in Maui comes with high guest expectations—and nothing impacts reviews more than cleanliness and hospitality. Let's discuss the cleanliness part in this post. Whether you manage your property yourself or hire professionals, following these tips can help you deliver 5-star experiences. Here are our top tips for maintaining a vacation rental your guests will love.

1. Use a Standardized Cleaning Checklist

Write down every detail for what you would expect to be a clean better than a hotel. Take this list with you every time. One or two missed things (like forgetting to leave a fresh packaged dish sponge) can build little irritations with guests that can build up and effect your review.

3. Clean all High-Touch Surfaces Even if They Don't Look Dirty

Sanitizing surfaces like door handles, light switches, fridge handles, and appliance buttons is essential—especially between guest stays. This is so important for guest safety. In addition, it may seem clean, but after you wipe it, it suddenly look better.

4. Stay Ahead with a Regular Deep Clean

Even with frequent turnover cleanings, your place needs a deep clean at least once every three months (more if you have very high occupancy). This can include shampooing carpets, scrubbing grout, flipping mattresses, and clearing out air vents. Don't forget to look up when you clean. It's easy to miss dusty ceiling fans.

5. Have a Few Cleaning Supplies that Leave a Great Scent

Sense of smell is a powerful emotional trigger. We've found that a bathroom that smells faintly of bleach will remind the guest that you have sanitized the bathroom for them and wood that smells polished will remind them that you're cleaning high touch surfaces. We really like Orange Glo for furniture. It protects, oils, and is like an air freshener as well.

6. Pay Attention to the Details

Neatly folded towels, well-made beds, and a fresh scent go a long way in guest satisfaction. Add thoughtful touches like a welcome note or small local gift to make guests feel special. We use the trifold on towels and leave a handwritten welcome note with local chocolates.

7. After Cleaning Walk Through the Property Like a Guest Who Just Arrived

Before each cleaning, walk through your rental from a guest’s perspective. Pretend like you just arrived after a long drive and are seeing the property for the first time. Scan every surface for one last check. We'll sometimes catch a stray hair or misplaced cushion this way. Check for fingerprints on glass, water spots on fixtures, sand in corners, or leftover items under beds. Small oversights can build up small irritations with guests and decrease your chances of getting 5 stars.

8. Hire Local Experts Who Know the Island

Coming up with local and current recommendation, answering very specific questions, and responding quickly to unique issues can be difficult if you're busy with you're life, job, or you live several hours away. That’s where we come in. At Knight Vacation Rentals, we specialize in vacation rental cleaning, handyman services, and guest hospitality tailored for Maui. We know what guests expect—and we deliver it, every time.
